Overview

A resume is an at-a-glance catalog of your professional qualifications. Its purpose is to highlight your background and the traits that make you a good candidate. It should:

Be easy to read and show design thinking
Meet the standards of formatting
Highlight the skills, experience, and training that make you a strong candidate

A strong resume is the first and foremost way to stand out and secure a job interview.

Planning

Planning for your resume requires an extensive inventory of your professional background and a revision process to ensure that you have produced the best possible product.

Inventory Phase:

  • Document all of your relevant work experience
  • Record any awards, honors, and accomplishments
  • Complete a transferable skills inventory and note anything that may apply

Revision Phase:

  • Find a template that works for you and import your information into it
  • Revise wording on your skills and bullets so that they show your strengths, sound impressive, and highlight your positive influence and deliverables

Format

Here are the major working parts for your resume format:

Front Matter: This will include your name, contact information, and a summary of your qualifications
Skills Section: This should highlight your professional and transferable skills
Experience Section: This will include your professional experience
Education Section: This will show the education and training you’ve received that qualify you for this job
Optional Sections: These can include honors and awards, certifications, and service
