18 REA 112 Common Assessments for eLumen

Course Learning Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Analyze material at the college level using text- and discipline-based inferencing
  2. Apply a variety of critical reading and thinking strategies to a wide variety of college-level reading materials.
  3. Apply information literacy strategies.
  4. Use study strategies with content-area textbooks to improve comprehension/retention of information.

CLO Measurement and Reporting

Use the measurement described below to assess each of your students for each of the CLOs indicated.  Record your data in eLumen. Access eLumen from the icon on the dashboard of your MyPima page.  Select your class CRN.  For CLOs 1, 2, and 4 mark each student as exceeds criteria, meets criteria, or does not meet criteria based on the standards explained below.  For CLO 3, mark each student as pass/fail.

CLO Assessment Standards
1 Annotated Bibliography Rubric: Instructors should assign the writing of an Annotated Bibliography that includes citations and annotations (here referring to bibliographic annotations rather than study skills annotations) from 6 different types of sources. Exceeds (4) 80% and above, Meets (3) 70-79%, Does not meet (2) 69.9% or below, Did not complete assignment (1), N/A registered but not attending
2 Final course grade Exceeds (4) 80% and above, Meets (3) 70-79%, Does not meet (2) 69.9% or below, N/A student is registered but not attending
3 Annotated Bibliography Rubric (see CLO #1) In order to Pass (1) a student must score 60% or above on the assignment as a whole, Fail (0) 59% or below, N/A student is registered but not attending
4 Study Guide: Study guide assignments are designed by the instructor and require students to take notes and/or summarize the contents of one or more college level textbook chapters or the equivalent.
Some possible note taking formats include, SQ3R, outline notes, annotations, Cornell notes, two column notes, semantic maps, and summaries. Notes should contain main ideas and major details.
Exceeds expectations (4): The student demonstrates the ability to write clear, original, organized notes covering all information needed to study for a test over textbook content. Meets expectations (3):The student demonstrates the ability to write clear, organized, original notes over most of the information needed to study for a test over textbook content. Does not meet expectations (2): Notes textbook content are incomplete, lack organization, or are otherwise unsuitable for study purposes. Does not meet expectations (1); No notes submitted. N/A student registered but not attending.

Summaries or Annotations All summaries are well written, comprehensive, and well paraphrased. More than 200 words each. All summaries are mostly  comprehensive,but may contain some issues with paraphrasing or organization. Minimum of 200 words each. Less than the required number of summaries, summaries are not adequately paraphrased or not organized,one or more summaries less than 200 words. Student may have misunderstood the task.
Synthesis* Excellent synthesis combining information from all sources. Clear synthesis statement and smooth transitions. More than 300 words. Adequate

synthesis with synthesis statement. Contains information from multiple sources. At least 300 words.

Synthesis attempted, but not adequately organized,  may have some gaps in logic or transitions.  May not contain information from all sources. Student may have misunderstood the task.
Writing Quality Well developed voice, neutral, academic, informational tone, few, if any errors in spelling and grammar. Neutral, informational tone, may have some errors in grammar and/or spelling that do not prevent the reader from understanding the message. Attempted, but significant errors in tone, purpose, and/or grammar and spelling.

* New to this rubric is the element of synthesizing information from all sources. This coordinates with the new textbook, and the course outline. May be written as part of the assignment or as a separate reflection.

CLO criteria:

Exceeds: Student scores “yes” on all the above criteria.

Meets: Student scores “yes” or “somewhat” in all the above criteria.

Does not meet: Student scores “no” in any of the above criteria after being offered the opportunity for revision.

NA: Student does not submit assignment.
