Executive Summary
Introduction
Over half of all the courses at Pima Community College (PCC) have Zero Textbook Costs (ZTC) and many utilize Open Educational Resources (OER) instead of high-cost commercial materials that have been traditionally used. The switch not only saves students money and promotes equitable access to education, but OER also provides faculty with the flexibility they need to produce culturally responsive pedagogy within courses.
Background
It is important that students understand which courses have material costs and which have zero textbook costs so they can make informed choices about classes. It is also beneficial to raise awareness about open education and encourage students to be a part of knowledge creation, rather than simply consumers of information. This internship came about with PCC students in mind and the realization that outreach goals would be better met through teamwork.
