Chapter 3: Culturally Responsive Teaching

This chapter focuses on the “Being” aspects of culturally responsive teaching, and offers frameworks for understanding pedagogical changes.

For Reflection:

Below are questions to consider as you begin this chapter:

  • Do the instructional resources I use allow learners to see themselves?
  • Do I use cultural references, experiences, and knowledges learners bring as assets to be connected to or built upon?
  • Do I review the instructional resources I use for historical accuracy, stereotypes, cultural relevance, and multiple perspectives?
  • How do I seek to learn about my learners’ existing knowledge, cultural backgrounds, interests, and issues of concern?
  • How do my behavioral and communication expectations of learners consider varying cultural norms?
  • How do I reduce communication barriers with my learners?
  • How do I cultivate trust, authenticity, and transparency to my classroom demeanor?
  • How can I grow in this area of my teaching?
