12 Universal Design for Learning

Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is a framework to improve and optimize teaching and learning for all people based on scientific insights into how humans learn. It’s often simplified to a “plus one” model that encourages exploration and easy adoption of the practice. Use of the framework accompanies a well-rounded approach to culturally responsive teaching.

UDL Guidelines

The UDL Guidelines are used in the implementation of Universal Design for Learning. These guidelines offer a set of concrete suggestions that can be applied to any discipline or domain to ensure that all learners can access and participate in meaningful, challenging learning opportunities.

The following is a description of the UDL Examples graphic organizer pictured in the module. The dark teal column, from top to bottom, states: Multiple Means of Engagement • Explicitly state learning goals and/or examples. • Provide note-taking support. • Give opportunities to celebrate. • Offer opportunities for reflection. The medium teal column, from top to bottom, states: Multiple Means of Representation • Provide content in multiple ways. • Employ interactive learning activities. • Use multimedia resources to deliver content. • Link new information to previously learned content or experiences. The lightest teal column, from top to bottom, states: Multiple Means of Action and Expression • Develop an agenda or learning plan and follow it. • Provide access to resources to deepen learning. • Include a variety of communication options. • Offer opportunities to review content or practice skills.

Though the Guidelines make UDL easy to pick up, deeper engagement with Universal Design for Learning occurs with intentional, extended review and redevelopment of the course curriculum.
