Chapter 1 Introduction

Though the definition of what constitutes art is disputed and has changed over time, general descriptions center on the idea of imaginative or technical skill stemming from human agency and creation. In other words, skill from the capability of humans to express creative ideas through independent thought and action.

The first short video from Goodwill Community Foundation will give you a brief introduction and help you realize your own definition of art. The next video explores the various types of activities that can be considered art from music to sculpture to poems to paintings and beyond and we explore the topic of how we can determine something to be an artwork. Along the way we’ll see a definition of What is Art?, coming into focus.

Themes in Art is a topic so rich and wide in range that it is divided into two chapters during Module 2. The theme of a work of art is the fundamental and universal idea explored in the work. Themes are usually implied rather than explicitly stated. Thematic content is not required in a work, and some artists will create works where the theme might depend on the viewer. In this Module we will be working closely with the Annenberg Learner, Art Through Time video series. Art Through Time: A Global View examines a variety of themes that connect artworks created around the world in different eras. This award winning 13 part series explores the themes that are universally inspired through our shared human experiences.

So if understanding art is subjective and each person’s view of art comes from their own unique cultural background and experience, it means we may each have a slightly different definition. However, if we can learn to appreciate the value others place on art we may broaden our perspective and come to new understanding about ourselves and others.

Now we have a slightly better understanding of the scope of artworks and we’ve heard a definition of art that evolved from – “Art is the expression or application of human creative skill or imagination.” to the final draft – “Art is the purposeful expression or application of human creative skill or imagination that makes the audience feel something.”
