6 In-Person Teaching

This section outlines what adjunct faculty need to know when teaching on campus at Pima. From using D2L to managing classroom logistics and understanding emergency procedures, it provides key information to help you navigate the in-person teaching experience.

D2L

Regardless of in-person or virtual teaching, all faculty must:

  • Fully utilize the grade book in D2L (Pima’s Learning Management System)
  • Post their syllabus to the D2L course shell via the Simple Syllabus platform

D2L Brightspace is Pima Community College’s Learning Management System. Learning Management Systems are used to deliver and create course content as well as track and report student progress and grades.

The D2L gradebook is used in all courses to track and report student grades, regardless of teaching modality. Keeping an up-to-date gradebook in D2L is one of the responsibilities of adjunct faculty at Pima.

Additionally, for every for-credit course at Pima is required to have its syllabus posted to the D2L course shell via Simple Syllabus.

For more information on how to use D2L, visit the D2L section under Tools & Platforms in this toolkit.

D2L Essentials

While not required, the D2L Essentials course is highly recommended to get you started using Pima’s D2L Learning Management System. The D2L Essentials course has been designed with Pima faculty in mind and is a comprehensive resource on how to navigate D2L and explanations of common tasks many instructors at Pima will encounter using the system.

D2L Essentials is a fully-online, asynchronous course – meaning the course can be taken beginning at any time and as a self-paced independent study.

Adjunct Faculty are able to register for this course prior to obtaining their MyPima credentials via CourseMerchant. Enroll in D2L Essentials here.

Classroom Technology

The EdTech Team assists with all faculty classroom technology needs. Classroom technology includes HyFlex support as well as Zoom support.

For more information, visit the Classroom Technology section under Faculty Resources in this toolkit.

Copying and Printing

We encourage individuals and departments to use digital options rather than printing paper copies to offer the greatest access and to conserve our human and natural resources. If you need assistance with D2L or Google applications to support digital access, please contact Faculty Services and Resource Centers at 520-206-6511 or faculty-services@pima.edu.

However, should paper copies be needed, self-serve copy machines are available at all Faculty Services & Resource Centers. Courtesy copy services are also available at each center with at least a 24-hour advance work day notice by email or drop off of hard copies with complete request information: number of copies needed, finishing (stapling, collated, double-sided, etc.). All PCC Copyright Policies apply. Please contact the campus Faculty Services & Resource Centers for additional information.

Parking

Free parking is available at all Pima campuses. There is no reserved parking space on the College premises with the exception of those reserved for individuals with disability placards or plates.

Emergency Procedures

Each campus or center may have special guidelines. In case of fire or other emergencies, contact the Department of Public Safety at 206-2700 or 911. Appropriate administrators must be notified immediately of accidents or other emergencies, and must complete an accident form. In the case of accidents/incidents, a report must be filed with the Department of Public Safety.

Department of Public Safety or Emergency Services will:

  • dispatch personnel to the scene
  • administer first aid, if required
  • radio for medical and ambulance service, if needed
  • contact relatives or friends, if requested

In cases that do not require ambulance transportation or emergency room treatment, parties should contact their personal physicians.

A Note on Vulnerable Communities: As an adjunct faculty member, please consider the effects that policing might have on vulnerable populations among our students and their families.

Classroom Access

Access to classrooms and laboratory facilities can vary by campus depending upon whether the rooms are internal or external to the building. Many campus rooms will be accessible by either ID Badge access, a keypad code, or may remain unlocked. If your supervisor has not provided guidance, please locate the room locations in which you will be teaching to determine what is needed.  See Pima ID Badge & Access Information at https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Rtz471zXUJSuDrsa4whHexd_zhYGDZupM4lp_AG9n0I/edit?usp=sharing

ID Badge access must be initiated by your supervisor. Should a keypad code be needed, please contact your supervisor for guidance.  If a room is unexpectedly locked for your class period, please contact Campus Police/Campus Security dispatch at (520) 206-2700.
