1 Leadership and Planning

Key Department Head Duties

  • Collaborates with division dean, academic leaders, and faculty to develop and oversee educational programs aligned with student goals and learning outcomes.
  • Develops a master schedule, including staffing, that provides clear pathways for students to complete department programs and necessary support courses.
  • Monitors enrollments as session dates to adjust the schedule accordingly.
  • Facilitates strategic planning, benchmarking, and program review efforts, including advisory committees that promote continuous improvement of their department. Supports regulatory and accreditation work of the department.
  • Serves as the first point of contact for student complaints related to the department.
  • Provides institutional coordination of instructional efforts by interacting frequently with the division deans, academic leaders, and other department heads. Coordinates department efforts with Student Affairs to maximize student success. Represents the department in various institutional contexts. Ensures appropriate participation by their area in division, campus, and college-wide projects that impact the department.
